I graduated from University College Cork with a Ph.D. (Materials Chemistry) in 2000. I researched the synthesis and characterization of periodic mesostructural silica and doped-silica materials under the supervision of Prof. M.A. Morris. 

  Since then, I have worked as Contract Researcher, Post Doctoral Researcher and then Staff Researcher at Tyndall-UCC on a number of projects involving thin-film coatings by sol-gel, aerosol-assisted CVD and ALD coating methods.

I currently work with Dr. Ian Povey and Prof. Martyn Pemble on group projects and related aspects of thin film growth, process development and  characterisation.
I have had significant involvement in  research projects, and was Tyndall PI for EU project ‘ SNAPSUN (novel nanocomposite materials for photovoltaics)’, FP7-NMP-2009-SMALL-3 and was PI for the Enterprise Ireland  project ‘FRECALD (flame resistant fabric coatings by ALD).  My current research activities can be broadly grouped into thin film growth and characterisation of oxides and  nano-composites. 
I am also interested in technology transfer and commercialisation of research outputs. I am currently participating in the  MSc (Innovation, Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship) program in the UCC- Cork University Business School (CUBS) under the direction of Dr. Brian O'Flaherty (course completion date - September 2019)





 
My current research activities can be broadly grouped into thin film growth and characterization of a) oxides and b) nano-composites.
For oxide thin film growth I employ the sol-gel method, aerosol-assisted CVD and ALD and in the case of nano-composites the sol-gel method, chemical solution deposition and aerosol-assisted CVD are used. In the past, my activities were centered on basic research into novel materials systems, primarily in relation to sol-gel and inorganic-organic hybrid materials systems. However, over time my research activities began to become much more applied in nature, including more work on development of thin film solutions to meet  a need, or solve a technical issue. As such specific needs generally required growth processes with a great degree of control, I tended to become more involved in aerosol-assisted CVD and ALD process development.

In the future I see myself continuing in the development of thin films by both aerosol-assisted CVD and ALD to meet both internal and external requirements. I have targeted  a) growth of nanocomposite thin films incorporating silicon and other metallic nanoparticles for photovoltaic and sensor applications and  b) roll-to-roll ALD coating of fabrics and  other porous membrane materials as my primary research topics, going forward. I will continue to apply these topics to the themes of Energy and Health/Medical in which I am currently active.
